Aftermath
In order to keep the camp a secret, they disguised the camp with tree branches, along the outside fences and the roof. When the camp was found, the officers had to get rid of any evidence of what they were doing. So the officers wouldn’t get in trouble, they burned the corpses. Towns all around the area were under a black oily smoke and had to even scrape human fat from their windows. They would then put the corpses into mass graves that were all roughly 20 m x 30 m x 6 m deep. Only about 50 Jews survived from this camp. Belzec was eventually plowed over and turned into a farm to prevent any scavengers looking for leftover belongings. The people of Belzec believed the victims of the camp needed a memorial, so one was built later on.
